Horses have played an important part in the history of mankind, hear are some horse themed landmarks and monuments located all around the world

Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue
 Genghis Khan Horse Statue
The Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue is part of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex. It is a 130-foot tall statue of Genghis Khan on a horse at the bank of the Tuul River. According to legend, this was the location that he found a golden whip. The statute is pointed east towards his birthplace. Visitors can visit the head of the horse through the statue`s chest and neck where they will find a panoramic view.

The Equestrian Statue of Gattamelata was created by Donatello, an early Italian Renaissance artist, in 1453. It portrays the Renaissance condottiere named Erasmo da Narni. Erasmo served mostly under the Republic of Venice.

Equestrian Statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni
The statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, is a Renaissance sculpture in Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, Italy. It was created by Andrea del Verrocchio in the 1480`s. The statue portrays the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni, who served under the Republic of Venice. It is nearly 13 feet tall excluding the pedestal. It is the second major equestrian monument of Italian Renaissance, the first being Donatello`s Equestrian Statue of Gattamelata.

Alton Barnes White Horse
The Alton Barnes White Horse is an old chalk figure that has been cut into a hill that is north of Alton, Wiltshire, England. The White Horse was originally cut into the hillside in 1812. There are three figures total, and they are all based on the white horse hill figure in Wiltshire, the Cherhill White Horse. The Alton Barnes White Horse is the third largest white horse figure in Wiltshire.

Gettysburg Horse Monuments
The Gettysburg monuments honoring several Union and Confederate generals portray the generals on horseback. The Union generals that are honored are Meade, Reynolds, Hancock, Howard, Slocum, and Sedgwick. The Confederate generals that are honored are Lee (on top of the Virginia Memorial) and Longstreet.

The monument to General Hancock is southeast of Gettysburg on Cemetery Hill. In 1896, it was dedicated by the State of Pennsylvania.
 Gettysburg Horse Monuments

The State of Virginia Monument is the largest of the Confederate monuments on the battlefield of Gettysburg. General Lee`s figure astride his favorite horse was created by Frederick Sievers. The monument is 41 feet high in its entirety, and the statue of Lee and his horse is 14 feet tall.

The equestrian statue of General Longstreet stands along the West Confederate Avenue in Pitzer`s Woods. The monument was made by Gary Casteel.

Major General Oliver Howard and the citizens of Maine who served are honored by the monument that is southeast of Gettysburg on Cemetery Hill where he had settled a fallback position to allow the Union soldiers to rally after their defeat.

The monument to General Meade is on Cemetery Ridge which is south of Gettysburg. The monument features Meade sitting on his horse. The monument was created by Henry Bush-Brown, who also created the statues of Generals Reynolds and Sedgwick.

Major General John Reynolds was the highest ranking officer that was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. There are three monuments on the Gettysburg battlefield to General Reynolds. On Chambersburg Pike, an equestrian monument of Reynolds was erected just west of Gettysburg.

An equestrian monument was erected in honor of Sedgwick south of Gettysburg on Sedgwick Avenue. The statue features Sedgwick mounted on his horse. Sedgwick graduated in the top 25 out of 50 cadets from the 1837 class at West Point. He later went on to become Colonel after Lee resigned his commission.

Slocum`s monument is on Slocum Avenue just south of Gettysburg. The State of New York dedicated the monument in 1902. Edward Clark Potter created the bronze sculpture. The statue is 15 feet and 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 7,300 pounds.
